Brighthand: Palm Drops Price of Tungsten W
Brighthand reported that Palm is cutting down the price of its Tungsten|W model to about USD420. That's roughly RM1600. It looks like Palm is preparing to phase out the T|W series .... Here is what I see of the future,
Handspring has a range of "communicator" series PDAs that has been tried and tested on the field ... the Treos. And recently Handspring has introduced a new Treo600 series that "out-spec" the T|W. With the news that Palm and Handspring would become one soon, I think Palm would continue the Treo series as the communicator or smartphone sector of the industry.
Palm, I think would carry 3 range of PDA then,
- the Zire series (consumer level),
- the Tungsten series (Enterprice level) and
- the Treo communicator series (for both consumer and enterprise)
So, the first step is to reduce the T|W inventory, get rid of the stock. The sooner the better. Then prepare to take on the Treos as a Palm range of models.
This Palm/Handspring acquisition/merger would not be completed so soon, so one can expect the Treo600 to be marketed as the under the Handspring brand initially, and later rebranded as Palm Treo after the merger is complete.
Well, that's my prediction, if you can call it that ...
