Palmone X Mac OS X??

I was reading about the upcoming Palm COBALT at Brighthand, and towards the end of the article is something I did not expect to happen ....

"Mr. Slotnick (see picture at right) made it clear that PalmSource isn't developing a Mac version of the Palm Desktop. As the way the PIM apps work has changed significantly, this means Mac users won't be able to HotSync without third-party software. "

A sad news indeed ... All this while Palm PDAs was the alternative PDA to the Mac users, since PocketPC will not talk to their machines. We'll see a lot of dissapointed Mac users out there.

Hopefully, this does not mean that there won't be any HotSync capability for the new CobaltOS models coming out of the box. Mark/Space has hinted that anyone interested could license their "Missing Sync" software to make the Cobalt PDA "talk" to the Macs!

I hope Palmone could license and include the "Missing sync" in the Cobalt PDAs ... to be Mac ready out of the box. Or at least sell future Palmone PDAs for Windows and Mac separately.

Palmone could lose market share in the future if the do not include any kind of support for Mac users, albeit from new buyers or existing ones going for an upgrade.

.... Especially, if the rumour about the upcoming Apple PDA is true ....

Update:

I just came across an update on palminfocenter about this .... and I quote:

PalmSource Cheif Competitve Officer, Michael Mace, has issued a statement direcct from PalmSource regarding the issue in the article comments, "PalmSource is fortunate to have a great Palm OS developer community who provide solutions for Macintosh compatibility today. Palm OS provides an open and flexible architecture and allows its licensees to decide whether to ship a Mac compatibility solution with their Palm Powered device. (One such solution is provided by Mark/Space.) We are continuing our efforts with Apple to provide compatibility between Palm OS and Macintosh."

Things are looking good ... at least for now :)
