Brighthand — Sony Releases the Low-Cost TJ Series

Palm is not only the one introducing new PDAs, Sony is following close behind. Weeks after announcing the UX50/G sony now releases the Clie PEG-TJ35 and PEG-TJ25.

These two new Clies are to replace the SJ33 and the SJ22, Sony's low end PDA.

A rundown of the specs:-

Both TJ25 and TJ35 have:-
  • Motorola i.MXL processor at 200 MHz.
  • PalmOS 5.2
  • slots for Memory Stick or Memory Stick Pro
  • Sony-standard HotSync port,
  • 4.4 inches tall, 3.0 inches wide, and .47 inches wide.
  • weigh 4.9 ounces.
PEG-TJ35
  • The TJ35 has 32 MB of RAM, 23 MB is user accessible.
  • The TJ35 will have an audio jack and be able to play MP3s
  • The TJ35 will also come with Piscel Viewer and the Decuma text-entry system.
  • $220 after $30 rebate from Sony Style
PEG-TJ35
  • The SJ25 has 16 MB of RAM, 11 MB is user accessible.
  • no audio jack, which means no MP3
  • $179 after $20 rebate

This put these two Clies to compete with Palms Tungsten|E. The Zire21 looks like it is alone in the budget $99 PDA.

My thoughts on the TJ25/35 ....

Sony introduced 2 models to sandwhich the T|E. Notice the T|E $200 pricing is sandwich between the TJ25 $180 (RM685) and TJ35 $220 (RM840) pricie.

A good marketing plan I'd say.

Sony doesn't want to lose its customers who is "eyeing" the SJ33 to go for the T|E OS5 machine. So introducing the TJ35 is the next logical step in order to stay competitive and try to hold the current market share in that price range.

The TJ25 is a model that tries to make the Zire21 "look bad" and the T|E "a little too expensive". I as a prospect buyer, thoughts going thru my mind could be ... "would I just get this good Zire21 as an electronic organizer?" OR "For another $80 I can can have a color hi-res PDA with Memory stick expansion" AND "this TJ 25 has double the RAM of the Zire21 ...."

IMHO, PDA market are getting crowded that finding space in the correct target market is very crucial.
